The massive news is all over the Internet, and it’s something we have been waiting for with huge excitement, the announcement of Counter-Strike 2 has been made. But still, there is some confusion around this huge game release. When is CS2 going to be released? Is the new name Counter-Strike 2 or Counter Strike Source 2? But hold on, what is Source 2? Which logo will the game get at the release? How much will CS2 cost to download, and what is new and different with the game, compared to old CS:GO?
We got you covered!
Source 2 is a video game engine, created by Valve Corporation, and it was introduced for the first time in 2015. The same year, Dota 2 became the first game to be upgraded from the original Source engine to Source 2. Several games have been created with the “S2” engine, like the card game Artifact, Dota Underlords, and Half-Life: Alyx.
As we know, Valve has announced the release of their next new game, using Source 2, namely Counter-Strike 2.
However, CS2 isn’t a brand-new game, it’s basically an upgrade of, that’s built on the first version of the Source engine. Here we give you the answers to the biggest questions and a walkthrough of what Counter-Strike 2 will be like.
Valve have announced that the release of CS2 will happen sometime during this summer, and they refer to it as an “update”.
“All of the game’s new features will be unveiled during the game’s formal launch this summer. The features will be tested during this time, and Valve will assess them to address any problems before the official release.” – Counter-strike.net/cs2

In Counter-Strike 2, the user interface has undergone a total makeover, with new visual effects applied to the HUD. These upgrades not only look nicer but also provide crucial game information. CS 2 sounds have been adjusted to be more identifiable, more in touch with the physical surroundings, and convey more game information. Additionally, they have been rebalanced for more pleasant hearing.
Every visual effect, from the user interface to the gameplay, has been redesigned. In Counter-Strike 2, all visual effects have been updated.
In order to make use of all the new Source 2 rendering tools and features, Counter-Strike 2 maps are being updated and refreshed. Maps are better, cleaner, and brighter after updates and refreshes. The redesigned maps were constructed entirely from scratch, utilizing all of Source 2’s new rendering tools and features.
There is a new appearance and behaviour for water, explosions, fire, smoke, mouth flashes, bullet streaks, impact, and many other effects thanks to the Source 2 lighting and particle systems.
The most important gameplay visuals in Counter-Strike 2 have been redone with readability in mind. From a distance, bullet impacts are clearly visible, while directional blood hits provide more information as you move across the environment (though they eventually fade). Experience C4 explosions, fire, and illumination that have been totally revamped. The environmental effects in Counter-Strike 2 are more visually accurate and consistent thanks to Source Engine 2 and current technology.
Moving, firing, and throwing no longer depend on tick rate. The core of Counter-Strike 2 is the sub-tick update. Previously, the server merely evaluated the world every discrete amount of time (referred to as a tick). The servers are aware of when movement starts, a shot is fired, or a grenade is tossed at precisely the right moment thanks to Counter-Strike 2’s sub-tick refresh architecture.
Because of this, your movement and fire will be similarly responsive regardless of the tick rate, and your grenades will always land in the same location.
Smoke grenades are now dynamic, volumetric objects that respond to sunlight, gunfire, explosions, and the surrounding environment.
Smoke can now interact with other gameplay occurrences, opening up new possibilities. HE projectiles and grenades can propel smoke to temporarily open up blind spots or widen the occlusion zone. Now, smoke will escape from cracked windows and open doors, ascend and descend stairs, spread into wide hallways, and combine with other smoke. Smoke particles in Counter-Strike 2 integrate with the unified lighting system to produce more lifelike light and colour.
All of the gameโs new features will be revealed when it officially launches this summer, but the road to Counter-Strike 2 begins today as a Limited Test for select CS:GO players. During this testing period, weโll be evaluating a subset of features to shake out any issues before the worldwide release.
Counter-Strike 2 will not cost anything, it will be free to play and released as an update to the current Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
