LoL World Championships Schedule, format and live streaming

It’s that time of year again, as 24 of the best League of Legends teams converge on 1 stage to decide, at least for one more year, who is the best of them all. Here we give you information about the event and where you can bet on it.

This year the tournament takes place in Shanghai, China amidst the backdrop of the Covid-19 epidemic. While no decision has been made on spectators being allowed at this year’s championships the organisers have confirmed that they will borrow from the NBA and other sports’ bubble concept for managing and minimising the risk associated with hosting such an event and Covid-19.

Each team will be assigned bubbles based on where they are drawn in the brackets and each team must arrive in Shanghai weeks in advance in case of any positive cases or the need to quarantine on arrival to China.

LoL Worlds 2020 Schedule & Format

The format for this year’s worlds will be the same as previous years. Beginning with a Play-In series, the 4th best team in China and Europe, the 3rd best from North America come up against the 2nd best teams in Vietnam and the Pacific Champions Series and the best teams from Russia, Japan, Latin America, Oceania and Turkey. These 10 teams will fight it out for the right to enter the group. Only 4 will qualify and with some big names expected in the play-ins this year there will be some shocking results for sure.

These 4 teams will have earned the right to join the tournament proper with the direct qualifiers from around the world. 3 from China and Europe, 2 from South Korea and North America and 1 each from Vietnam and the Pacific Champions Series.

The main event of the tournament will have these 16 teams divided into 4 groups of 4, where each team will play each other team twice. The top 2 of each group will then go through to the knockout stage. All knockout stage matches will be a best of 5 games.

The dates have now been finalised and a month long extravaganza of league will crescendo at Halloween for an apt finishing date this year I think.

Play-In Stage: 25 September – 30 September

Main Even Group Sate: 3 October – 11 October

Quarter-finals: 15 October – 18 October

Semi-finals: 24 October – 25 October

Final: 31 October

The draw for this year’s groups will be the 15th of September at 7am Central Time, 2pm CET, Noon GMT, at which point we can tell exactly where the potential upsets are at their most probable.

Where to Watch

You can watch the draw as well as all the games on the official Twitch stream https://www.twitch.tv/riotgames , official YouTube https://www.youtube.com/lolesports/ channel or at watch.lolesports.com.

Here’s our betting tips for the Chinese League of Legends teams that have qualified directly to the main event of the LoL world championships. The LPL region is the only one that has consistently troubled the Korean hegemony that appeared at the beginning of the LoL world championships.

Top Esports

With the slightly convoluted way that the Chinese LPL selected their representatives for worlds this year Top Esports went for the easiest route, by winning the summer season, just edging out JD Gaming in a thrilling 3-2 final. Another roster that mixes young talent with experience this roster is definitely one that is not here to make up the numbers.

2018 World Champion ADC JackeyLove knows exactly what it takes to win the top prize. Combined with the years of experience joining him in the form of Karsa on support this bot lane has all the know how to win and sometimes more importantly for the duo lane, to not throw. Their midlaner Knight is coming off an unbelievable season and will most likely be the player to get funnelled as much resources as possible.

Suggested Betting: Knight for highest KDA in group stages.

JD Gaming

Jingdong Gaming as the second seed managed to qualify for Worlds without having to go through the regional play-off by securing the best finish over the spring and summer split. A small consolation after losing to Top Esports in the Summer Final. After a poor start to the summer split they made some small organisational changes and then went on a tear during the middle section of the season. Though this form did curtail towards the end of the season they had done enough to qualify.

Their roster has been pretty settled for a while now and all players are comfortable playing with each other, their main worry going into this world championship will be mentality with very little experience on the world stage in any position. If they the end of season is anything to go by they may not have the required steel to up their game when it counts.

Suggested Betting: JD Gaming not to get out of group stages. I have a feeling these could be the biggest casualty of the group stages as their inexperience comes back to haunt them.

Suning

Suning have been around in the LPL for a long time but have always been a bottom to mid-tier team. That all changed this year when they put together an impressive run to qualify as Chinas third seed. This unexpected result can probably be traced to their Jungler SofM, the Vietnamese prodigy who has had to wait his turn in the limelight due to age restrictions for competitive play.

Once SofM joined the main roster things began to look up for Suning and after acclimatising to his new team during the spring split he carried the team to glory during the summer split. With a particularly impressive showing in the regional finals against LGD to decide who gets 3rd seed for China.

Suggested Betting: SofM for group stage MVP. Everything Suning do will go through him.

Our look at the North American and Pacific Championship League of Legends esports teams that have qualified directly to the main event of the LoL world championships.

Team SoloMid

The most famous team in North America, the popular organisation has retaken its place as the top NA team after scares from Team Liquid and Cloud 9 over recent years. A closely fought summer split this year had TSM finishing in 4th during the regular season but as is so common as soon as play-offs came around TSM upped their game, though not immediately. After a shock 3-0 loss to Golden guardians in the first round TSM fought through the losers bracket beating every team that finished above them in the regular season showing that the best of 5 is truly their favourite format.

With Doublelift back and Bjergsen still at mid lane there is high hopes for this roster coming into worlds but the question will always remain as to how competitive is North America really. Many believe this is the best chance for NA since Cloud 9’s 3rd place finish in 2018. If that faith is misplaced is up for debate.

Suggested Betting: Doublelift to have highest kills in group stages. His mechanics are still on point and as long as he is not forced into Ashe should be outplaying any other ADC.

FlyQuest

FlyQuest made some major changes to their 2020 roster with the aim of becoming a major contender in the North American scene. Bringing in veterans Power of Evil and Ignar from Misfits to complement their already experienced roster they did just that. Finishing 3rd in a close fought regular season they made it to the finals only to lose to TSM in a nail-biting 3-2 loss. This was enough to grab the second seed from NA and avoid the play-ins.

Questions will always be asked about ADC WildTurtle and if he can perform at the top level with the consistency required. The current Meta favouring supporting ADCs may help him in that regard but unless he is well protected he can cost his team the win.

Suggested Betting: First Blood against them, Santorin has the nickname Passive Ward for a reason and will rarely look for any early game plays.

Machi Esports

The Taiwanese first seeds did not come through the easy way, despite an OK regular season going 13-5 that was just enough to get into the first round of playoffs. This did give them the opportunity to show off their adaptability over the course of a best of 5 series. Making it to the semi-final before being beaten 3-2 by PSG Talon, this didn’t deter them as they brushed aside the more fancied J Team before getting revenge on PSG Talon in the final by sweeping them 3-0.

Their success will be down to the ability of Koala to lead this squad of relative newbies. As the most experienced player and shot-caller from the support role a lot of their plays will come from his roaming. A dark horse team but if TPA can win worlds then there is nothing stopping these players from emulating that success.

Suggested Betting: Koala to have highest kill participation in group stages. Despite being lower in PCS his ability on Thresh and Leona will be vital against higher calibre teams and expect him to be a lot more involved.

Here’s our take on the European League of Legends teams that have qualified directly to the main event of the LoL world championships.

G2 Esports

Last year’s beaten finalists G2 Esports will not want to let such a golden opportunity slip passed them again. Finishing as the top seed from a very competitive European championship they were made fight to the last minute by Fnatic.

The same roster as last year with the only change being Caps and Perkz swapping the ADC and Mid positions a few times. Caps came away with the MVP award so not the worst swap in history, but this flexibility in the two main carry roles will be a major asset at worlds. Though an over reliance on Caps did appear towards the end of the summer split its tough to say if it was over reliance or Caps was just playing at another level compared everyone else, team-mate or enemy.

Suggested Betting: Caps for worlds MVP

Fnatic

The only European world champions Fnatic are probably a bit tired of seeing G2 Esports at the top of Europe so often now. Coming in as EU’s second seed is no shame but the nature of the finals will not please them. Having beaten G2 Esports 3-2 in the semi-finals to lose to them 3-0 after G2 qualified via the losers’ bracket the loss will have stung. Expect them to come back stringer, as Fnatic always do.

With s very experienced roster all eyes will, as they always are, on ADC Rekkles. Now the main shot caller on the squad he has been excellent in the current meta of supporting ADCs. Though questions will be asked of their coaching and analyst staff if they get consistently out-drafted as they did against G2 Esports in the LEC finals. It’s tough to be in a losing position before the game has even started.

Suggested Betting: Opposition to get first blood. Fnatic tend to start slow but work their way into the game with better objective control.

Rogue

Rogue had a tough start to life in the LEC going 0-8 in their first 8 games of the 2019 spring split, but faith in their academy team meant some promotions and tough decisions for the main team resulted in them winning some matches and being much better prepared for the 2020 season. The won the 2020 summer regular season and only lost in the playoffs against Fnatic and G2 Esports, cementing their place as the third best team from Europe.

Another team with an experienced roster, many of their players have the experience required for playing on the grandest of stages. Though if this experience is enough is yet to be seen as they could not overcome Fnatic or G2 in best of 5 series.

Suggested Betting: Not to get out of group stage.

Our first look at the teams who have qualified for the LoL World Championship Play-In stage. These teams will have to fight tooth and nail to earnt the right to compete in the main tournament. We will look at each teams form and expected results.

LGD Gaming

China’s 4th seed coming into this year’s championships LGD Gaming are the perennial underachievers in China, a strong roster including ex SKT1 Jungler Peanut a lot is expect from this team. Having barely qualified for the Play-Ins strong form towards the end of the season mean that they may be peaking at the right time. Expect a strong early game push to try and close the game out early as is the current meta in China.

Suggested Betting: 2-0 win in every play-in game, they should steamroll this portion of the tournament.

MAD Lions

MAD Lions, formerly Splyce Gaming have a lot of experience in Worlds, having qualified in 2016, their Rookie year the newly rebranded team will be hoping for a run that saw them get to the quarter finals last year. While the roster has changed significantly they have picked up the playmaking support Kaiser expect a lot of their action to revolve around his roaming and plays in bot lane. Though Europe’s 4th seed the strength of the LEC this year means this is not an indictment on their ability.

Suggested Betting: First Blood, from Kaiser and Shad0w early game play making.

Unicorns of Love

The Unicorns of Love felt hard done by not being accepted into the 2020 LEC and so went on an absolute tear in the LCL losing only 1 game in the Summer Split and qualifying easily for the worlds Play-In stage. The roster still has the core that lost out to splice in last year’s Worlds Play-In final round they will surely have the form and desire to go 1 step further this year.

Expect these guys to come in with some never before seen strategies to catch out the supposedly better teams.

Suggested Betting: As an all or nothing team their matches have a good chance of going to the third map decider.

PSG Talon

The Pacific Championship Series second place team have the backing of French football team Paris St Germain. A strong team with an inexperienced roster it remains to be seen if they can handle the pressure of the big stage. Early indications suggest they are not with their form tailing at the end of the summer split finishing with a 0-3 loss in the finals. With only 1 player having experience on the world’s stage the pressure may be a bit too much for this young team.

Suggested Betting: These guys will lose maps and games to the supposed weaker teams and can be good value to lay against.

Rainbow 7

The absolute dominators of the Latin American LoL scene Rainbow 7 have won the last 9 LatAm championships… or put another way, every single one since the championship was formed. However their prowess at a local level is yet to translate to the international scene. They will want to show that they can keep up with the other regions. This year is probably too early to make an impression but hopefully they can build on the experience they get.

Suggested Betting: It’s tough to see them even win a map against the more established teams. Though a sneaky win against an out of form higher seed is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Our look at the Korean League of Legends teams that have qualified directly to the main event of the LoL world championships. While we have no Faker this year you can always count on the Korean teams to be in contention near the end of the tournament.

DAMWON Gaming:

Damwon Gaming are appearing at worlds for the second year running though this year they have qualified without needing the Play-Ins and are even the top Korean seed for this year’s tournament. Having gotten to the quarter finals last year the sting of the loss to G2 Esports is sure to still be felt.

After a disappointing spring split and Mid-Season cup they parted ways with their head coach and made Zefa sole head coach. The move worked as they went 16-2 in the regular season and didn’t drop a map in the play-offs. They have shown good form at the best of times and it’s tough to look at anyone else as the potential champions.

Suggested Betting: Damwon to win Worlds 2020

DRX:

DRX were the surprised package in this year’s LCK going 15-3 in the regular season and were unluckly not to finish first, losing only to an incredible run by Damwon Gaming. A relatively young roster they will be looking to ADC Deft to steady the nerves on the world’s stage. Deft having played in multiple word championships finishing 3rd with Samsung Blue in 2014.

Consistency will be key for DRX as they beat many top teams but lost maps against too many teams that they should have beaten, this resulted in them losing a seeding for the play-off finals and though they made the final perhaps the extra preparation time may have meant them getting the Korean first seed. So while they can beat anyone on their day they can also be beaten by anyone, and are particularly susceptible to poke comps.

Suggested Betting: Dropping maps against weaker teams is a high possibility with DRX.

Gen.G:

The T1 killers, Gen.G will have the unfortunate honour of being the least popular team at worlds this year as they defeated Fakers’ T1 to make it to the world championships this year. While beating a fan favourite will not get you many fans I doubt this roster will care too much. A complete change of the roster in 2019 with the sole aim of becoming the best the results have not been as good as expected for such a talented group.

Though where there is talent there is potential, having consistently out-drafted their opponents during the regular season, play-offs and the regional finals Gen.G will hope to use the down time before worlds to sharpen their team fighting and shot calling which has let them down on a few occasions this season. If they can clean up this element of play they could be a serious contender for the championship.

Suggested Betting: To make it to semi-finals, they can beat any team if they are on form and the most recent annihilation of T1 suggests they are finding form at just the right time.
